In humanity’s quest to have sustainable natural renewable resources we are still far off from reaching complete sustainability. In fact, at the current rate we are going we may never reach it and we may face sever consequences. However, along the way we have found some innovated solutions. We know of a wood-based flooring material that is eco-friendly and a natural renewable resource. This product is called cork flooring, and it’s made almost entirely out of cork.
Yes, cork is actually used as a flooring material. Cork originates from the bark of the cork oak tree. The tree’s bark is actually cork, and all that is needed from the cork oak tree is the bark for commercial production of cork flooring. This means harvesters only need to remove a small layer of the bark, leaving the cork oak tree intact without harm. The cork oak tree will reproduce its bark over the years and once again be harvested. This means no trees need to be cut down to produce cork flooring.
Contrary to popular belief cork is quite a durable product. The cellular structure of cork is the support behind its durability. Millions upon millions of honeycomb shape cells make up cork material. Inside these cells is trapped air, around 90% of the volume. This allows cork to be compressed and bent without damage; in fact up to 40% compress won’t damage cork’s design or shape. These same honeycomb cells also give cork flooring its comfort feel. It’s perfect for the living or bedroom and will feel great underneath your feet.
Cork also contains a naturally occurring chemical called Suberin. This waxy substance gives many more benefits to cork. This chemical is natural water resistant, making this floor type an excellent solution for the kitchen and bathroom. It’s also proven to be resistant to mold, mildew and allergens. That’s right; if you have pets anyone with allergies will just love your flooring choice. It’s as easy as vacuuming to remove pet dander and hair for flooring made out of cork.
We can go on and on about the benefits of this flooring solution. However, no benefit is greater than the fact it’s eco-friendly, naturally renewable and safe for the environment. Unlike other green products cork isn’t super expensive and around the same price of other flooring types in its category. So, if you’re looking for a sustainable flooring solution then you have found your match. If you’d like to learn more about cork flooring than feel free to follow the links below.
